Pomodoro guide

Use Pomodoro as a starting structure, not an inflexible rule.

The common Pomodoro pattern alternates focused work with short breaks. Its value comes from making a session concrete and giving rest a defined place.

Updated

A simple starting cycle

Choose one clear task, run a focused block, take a short break, and repeat. After several blocks, take a longer break. A 25-minute focus block and 5-minute break are common defaults, not requirements.

Adjust the duration deliberately

Shorter blocks can reduce the friction of starting. Longer blocks can fit writing, coding, design, or study that needs more continuity. Change one variable at a time and review the result over several sessions.

  • Use a visible goal for each block.
  • Pause notifications before starting.
  • Record interruptions instead of immediately following them.
  • Stop or extend only when the reason is clear.

When Pomodoro may not fit

Frequent alarms can interrupt flow, meetings may dictate timing, and accessibility or health needs can require a different rhythm. A timer is a support tool, not a measure of discipline.
